Mr & Mrs Walters, Travel Insurance

Travel insurance in detail

It is always worth discussing your requirements with an expert as your travel insurance will be influenced by a number of key considerations including: number of travellers, location, activities planned, and purpose of trip e.g. holiday or business. Options available when purchasing travel insurance include:

Medical expenses

Probably the most important element of travel insurance. This includes your medical and associated expenses in the event of injury, accident, illness, or death. Travellers to certain countries will need extended cover and this should be discussed with an adviser.

Personal belongings

Cover for loss or theft of your personal belongings and baggage. It is important to consider what items you are taking away and their value. It is also worth checking if personal belongings are covered under your household insurance while travelling.

Personal accident

Compensation for loss of life, limb, or sight, or permanent / temporary disablement sustained during your insured travel period, including repatriation. If you’re planning to take part in winter sports or other adrenaline activities this will need to be declared.

Delayed / missed departure or cancellation

Under certain circumstances, if your plans are delayed or cancelled then cover is available to either reimburse your financial loss or provide alternative travel plans.

Legal expenses

Cover for expenses in pursuing a claim for compensation for an occurrence during your trip.

Money

Cover for loss or theft of travel money, credit and debit cards, and travellers’ cheques.

Personal liability

Cover if you injure someone or damage their property.

Lost passport

Cover for costs incurred when replacing a lost or stolen passport.

Winter sports cover

Adding this to your policy provides greater cover for your activities and associated risks:

  • Ski equipment and passes – cover if ski equipment or passes are lost, damaged, or stolen.

  • Cancellation or curtailment – cover for financial loss from unused ski passes or ski school fees when certified unable to ski due to unforeseen injury or accident.

  • Adverse weather / piste closure – cover is provided if you are unable to ski due to lack of snow or adverse weather.

Adrenaline activities

Many sports, such as scuba diving, white-water rafting, and skydiving, may be excluded from your insurance policy given the additional injury risk they carry. Please call to speak to a holiday insurance specialist to make sure you’re covered.

It is important to note any Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advice on destinations, as most travel insurance policies will have exclusions for cover if the FCO advises against travel to that country.

Medical costs and litigation costs also vary drastically in USA and Canada and it is important you have a policy that includes these destinations if they form part of your plans.

Pre-existing medical conditions

It is vitally important that you declare any pre-existing medical conditions (PEMC), no matter how minor, when purchasing a policy.

The FCA estimates there to be up to 14.1 million consumers with a PEMC that look to purchase travel insurance each year. Of these consumers, approximately 0.7% were declined cover, and 11% purchased a policy with an exclusion for their PEMC.

The Money and Pensions Service (MaPS) has launched a travel insurance directory for people with serious pre-existing medical conditions to help them find suitable insurance cover if we’re not able to help.

The contact details for the directory is as follows:
